Without a doubt, the photogenic landscape of Sonsierra reaches its zenith of beauty during autumn. The season brings to the fields and vineyards a palette of colours full of subtlety, from reds of all kinds through to the deepest ochre, creating scenes of a truly postcard-worthy nature.
We recently found out the new scores for Rioja wines awarded by Luis Gutiérrez, who is the taster of Spanish wines for Wine Advocate, the famous publication founded by Robert Parker. We add now 7 new medals obtained by our wines at the prestigious AWC Vienna International Wine Challenge.
Continuing with the philosophy of producing singular wines which are deeply-rooted in the region and possessed of a clear identity, Sonsierra is launching its first vintage Tempranillo White. A limited edition wine, aged in wood over lees and produced from a variety arising from an 'albinism' mutation of Tempranillo Red which - thanks to perfectly adapting to the soil in Sonsierra and its particular characteristics - is promising to shower us with great whites.
Bodegas Sonsierra have always tried to provide a little constructive criticism to help the development and modernisation of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. So we are pleased that a suggestion made years ago is finally going to be discussed. Thus, we welcome all those clamouring for a change that is now pressing, given the current market situation.
We would like to introduce you to one of our most iconic and spectacular plots of land: El Manao, which is home to vines that are almost 70 years old and forms part of our old-growth vineyard. Its impressive vines can reach more than 1.5 metres in height when they have been pruned of vegetation.
In vineyards like El Manao we are able to grow grapes of exceptional quality due to the development of the plants’ roots, which have spread throughout the subsoil over the years and are able to overcome situations in which there is an excess or lack of water.
