Sonsierra wines sit atop the podium again on the back of three gold and four silver medals at one of the most demanding of all international events.
An international jury comprising renowned winemakers, wine experts, sommeliers, gourmets, distributors and specialised journalists has awarded seven more medals – three gold and four silver – to wines from Bodegas Sonsierra from among over 11,600 wines from 40 different countries. All wines were blind-tested under a strictly controlled tasting process.
In the Middle Ages, wine was made in the vineyard. This is demonstrated by the numerous stone troughs scattered throughout the Sonsierra. In total, there are nearly 100 distributed among the municipalities of Ábalos, Labastida and San Vicente, where we find most of them. More than 60 stone presses providing proof of the first steps made by our ancestors in the production and processing of wine.
Around 400 winemakers, grape workers and winery staff participated in collecting this year's Sonsierra harvest. The result was 3.5 million kilos of grapes, collected and selected by hand in each of our vineyards in the best condition to be turned into wine.
This was the result of hard work by growers and the numerous field tests performed during the vintage, with a climate very favourable for the absence of pests and the proper progress of the vegetative status of the strains.

Food is sometimes seasonal, and so too are certain wines; they are best enjoyed at different times of the year. In autumn, food and flavours we have missed come back to our tables, such as mushrooms, game and stews; and so do wines, with autumnal aromas and fruity and spicy flavours. They act as a kind of transition from the fresh and light wines we enjoy in the summer to what we drink in the winter - deeply coloured, velvety and strong wines.

Its elegant complexity, with balsamic notes and a certain spiciness on the nose, combined with roasted nuances and mineral intimation in the mouth, have earned the new Sonsierra Reserve 2011 the Gold Medal at the Mundus Vini International Wine Awards , which also recognised the winemakers with the Silver Medal for the Sonsierra Blanco Selección 2014.
Celebrating its 17th edition, Mundus Vini is organised by the specialist German publishing house, Meininger to promote quality and the marketing of the wines entered in the competition.
Androsela 2014 is a new initiative by Bodegas Sonsierra to create a product that stands out from the usual white wines of Rioja. It is a wine that is semi-sweet, delicate, suggestive, highly refreshing and low in alcohol. Only 8,000 bottles have been made from this year’s harvest.
The wine is as exclusive as the flower from which it takes its name: a rare and threatened species that only grows on the slopes of Mount San Lorenzo in La Rioja at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres.
Our wines have won five new medals – two gold and three silver – at four leading international competitions.
At the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, one of the most prestigious and respected wine competitions in the world, a Gold Medal was awarded to Perfume de Sonsierra 2010 and a Silver Medal to Sonsierra Selección Tinto 2014.
Sonsierra was awarded another Gold Medal at the 20th edition of the Brussels International Wine Competition, for its Sonsierra Selección Blanco 2014, which was also selected as the official wine of choice of the Regulatory Board for the Rioja PDO.
