Just a few weeks ago snow was everywhere, but fortunately it seems that we have finally left behind the harshness of winter. Spring is here to stay. The days are gradually lengthening and lightening and we fancy the idea of uncorking a refreshing, light wine - a wine that will delight our palate and accompany the meals that we are going to prepare this season.
When travellers traverse the trails among the vineyards of Sonsierra, there is something that grabs their attention. It comprises crude circular stone buildings, some of which are pointed on top. Popularly known as 'chozos' or 'guardaviñas', these striking buildings date back to the 19th century when the phylloxera outbreak that affected the French vineyards spurred wine production in La Rioja. Some people, however, suggest they are the heirs to the megalithic building tradition, of which there are many examples in this region
Our vines are awakening from their winter slumber and starting to bud. Once the mercury starts rising, the land gets warmer and the plants' cellular respiration restarts, leading to the buds weeping - which is none other than the plants' lifeblood being segregated as a result of the cuts made during pruning. From this point on, the buds start to swell and we begin to see the first bunches appearing at the tip; these will later separate and flower.
